How to wash your Zalto glasses

Zalto glasses can go in the dishwasher, and Zalto recommends it, as long as a few simple rules are followed. Here is how to keep them brilliant and clear for years.

In the dishwasher (recommended)

  • Choose the glass or delicate programme at 55°C or lower, with the shortest cycle
  • Rinse wine residue from the glasses before loading
  • Use a good detergent at a low dose; powder works better than tabs
  • Keep the salt topped up and use a little more rinse aid than usual
  • Place the glasses so they cannot touch, and keep tall glasses out of the corners
  • When the cycle ends, open the door slightly and let the glasses cool before taking them out by the stem or base

Important to avoid

  • Hot or intensive programmes above 55°C
  • Scouring pads, abrasive cloths or harsh cleaners
  • Fabric softener or starch on your drying towels, as it leaves streaks
  • Twisting the bowl and base in opposite directions when polishing, which can break the stem
  • Taking the glasses out while they are still warm

By hand and polishing

  • By hand, use warm water with a little mild detergent and hold the bowl with the stem between two fingers
  • A dash of lemon juice in the rinse water gives a streak-free shine
  • Polish only once the glass is cool, with a lint-free cloth: the base first, then the inside, the rim and the outside
  • For extra sparkle, hold the bowl briefly over steam before polishing
  • Decanters and carafes: a denture cleaning tablet or baking soda in warm water lifts wine stains
